ODM party leader Oburu Odinga has struck a cautious tone on the future political direction of the Luo community.
He pledged to exercise responsibility and restraint as leaders engage in conversations about the region’s next political chapter.
Speaking during a consultative meeting with party officials and grassroots leaders, Oburu said his leadership would be anchored on wisdom, unity and the long term interests of the community.
He cautioned against rushed political decisions driven by emotions. Personal ambition or external pressure could drive these decisions. He warned that such moves could expose the community to political uncertainty.
I will not lead the Luo community into deep waters or unsafe political choices,” Oburu said. “Our people have paid the price before when decisions were made without careful thought. This time, we must be deliberate, sober and strategic.”

The ODM leader emphasized that political realignments ahead of future elections must be informed by collective consultations. These decisions should not be made through individual pronouncements.
He stressed that unity within the community and the party remains paramount, especially at a time when national politics is undergoing rapid shifts.
Oburu noted that the Luo community has historically played a significant role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape. They must continue to do so without compromising their values. They should also maintain their bargaining power.
He added that leadership carries a responsibility not only to win elections but also to safeguard the dignity and political capital of the people.
Oburu warned against political shortcuts. He did not directly name specific political figures or alliances. Such shortcuts may offer short term gains but lead to long term marginalization.
He said ODM would take time to evaluate its options, including engagement with other political formations, while keeping the interests of its supporters at the center of any decision.
His remarks come amid growing debate within ODM and the wider opposition. The topics include possible political cooperation, succession politics, and the party’s future strategy.
Several leaders have expressed differing views, fueling speculation about internal divisions and possible shifts ahead of the next general election cycle.
Oburu, however, dismissed claims of a leadership crisis, insisting that healthy debate is part of democracy.
“What matters is that when we finally make decisions, they will be safe, sound and beneficial to our people,” he said.
