NPS Cracks Down on Senior Commanders Following Brutal Nandi Hills Pool Table Assault
NANDI HILLS, Kenya – The National Police Service (NPS) has officially taken decisive action against several high-ranking officers following a wave of public outrage sparked by a viral CCTV clip. The footage, which emerged earlier this month, showed armed police officers brutally assaulting young men playing pool at a local venue in Nandi Hills.
In a press statement released today, January 31, 2026, the Inspector General of the National Police Service (IG-NPS) confirmed that he has accepted the recommendations of the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) to initiate immediate administrative action against six senior commanders.
Commanders Held Accountable
The NPS highlighted that the disciplinary measures are intentionally focused on local leadership to ensure full accountability for conduct within their jurisdictions. The officers facing action include:
- Sub-County Police Commander (OCPD) for Tinderet.
- Officer Commanding Station (OCS) for Songoh.
- Officer Commanding Station (OCS) for Nandi Hills.
- Officers in Charge of the RDU, GSU, and ASTU camps in Songoh.
The Incident
The “disturbing” video, recorded on the night of January 10, 2026, captured at least ten officers storming a pool table venue. The footage showed the officers—some armed with rifles—ordering the youth to lie on their bellies before flogging them. Victims were reportedly forced to put their identification cards in their mouths while being interrogated for being out late.
“The IG-NPS reiterates to every officer that they bear a solemn duty as custodians of public safety, security, and property,” stated Muchiri Nyaga, the NPS Spokesperson. “There will be no tolerance for such misconduct.”
The Service expressed deep regret over the incident and extended sympathies to the victims, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that all illegal acts are dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
