The political mood in Siaya County shifted over the weekend after strong remarks were made about the future of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The statements, delivered during grassroots engagements, sparked excitement among supporters while also signaling the party’s expectations in ongoing political realignments.

Speaking under the Linda Ground mobilization program, Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga declared that the Orange Democratic Movement must secure significant positions in any post-2027 government arrangement.

He told residents that ODM would not participate in negotiations only to remain on the periphery of power.

According to Oburu, discussions involving President William Ruto are aimed at shaping a broad-based government after next year’s election, and the party expects meaningful representation if cooperation materializes.

He emphasized that ODM’s support base deserves tangible benefits, arguing that the party commands substantial influence, particularly in the Nyanza region.

We cannot sit at the table and leave empty-handed,” Oburu said, adding that the party’s leadership is keen on ensuring that its role in national politics translates into real authority and development opportunities for its supporters.

The veteran politician framed the talks as strategic rather than submissive, noting that political negotiations are part of democratic practice.

He reassured residents that ODM would safeguard its identity and principles even as it explores possible collaborations.

The Linda Ground initiative, which has seen ODM leaders traverse parts of Nyanza to consolidate grassroots backing, is being viewed as an effort to solidify the party’s bargaining power ahead of 2027.

Leaders have repeatedly urged supporters to remain united, saying internal cohesion will strengthen ODM’s negotiating position.

Oburu’s remarks come amid shifting political alliances across the country, with several leaders positioning themselves for the next electoral cycle.

While he did not provide specific details about the structure of any potential agreement, he hinted that the party is focused on securing big and strategic offices should a coalition government be formed.

Political analysts say the statement signals ODM’s intent to remain a central player in national politics rather than a passive participant.

The coming months are expected to see intensified consultations as parties weigh their options in preparation for 2027.

For now, ODM supporters in Siaya appeared energized by the message, interpreting it as a promise that their party will not only compete but also demand a decisive stake in Kenya’s next government.
