A renewed wave of concern over the safety of young people has sparked fresh debate across the country, with parents, university administrators and student leaders raising alarm over the growing influence of criminal networks around learning institutions.

Reports of increased substance abuse among students have prompted urgent calls for tighter security and stronger enforcement measures to protect campuses from infiltration.

Speaking during a security briefing, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen declared that the government has intensified its crackdown on narcotics networks, particularly those targeting universities and colleges.

We are dealing with drug peddlers especially those targeting university and college students,” he said, adding that authorities are closely monitoring hotspots near campuses.

Murkomen noted that security agencies have already launched coordinated operations aimed at dismantling distribution rings operating around higher learning institutions.

According to him, investigations have revealed that some peddlers deliberately position themselves near student hostels, entertainment joints and transport hubs to lure young people into drug use.

The CS warned that the government will not spare individuals found supplying drugs to students, saying tougher action will be taken against both street level dealers and those financing the trade.

He emphasized that the campaign will involve collaboration between the National Police Service, local administrators and university management.

In recent months, several universities have reported cases of students struggling with addiction, with counseling centers experiencing increased demand for rehabilitation support.

Murkomen said the government is also working with the Ministry of Education to strengthen awareness campaigns within campuses to educate students about the dangers of substance abuse.

Security officials argue that drug abuse among students not only affects academic performance but also exposes young people to crime, exploitation and long term health complications.

The CS reiterated that the government’s approach will combine enforcement with preventive strategies, including community engagement and intelligence gathering.

Murkomen also called on parents and guardians to remain vigilant and maintain close communication with their children while they are in school.

He urged students to resist peer pressure and report suspicious activities around their institutions.

Student leaders have welcomed the move but called for transparency in the operations to ensure innocent youth are not harassed during crackdowns.

Some have also appealed for expanded mental health services and rehabilitation programs within universities.

The government’s renewed focus signals a broader strategy to safeguard learning environments from criminal influence.

As operations intensify, authorities insist their goal is clear to ensure campuses remain safe spaces dedicated to education and personal growth, free from the threat of drugs and the networks that profit from them.
