The county government has intensified efforts to improve access to advanced medical services, reducing the need for patients to travel to Nairobi and other distant towns for specialised treatment.
For years, many families in Machakos struggled with the heavy financial burden of seeking healthcare outside the county. Patients requiring CT scans, MRI services, specialised surgeries and advanced diagnostics often had to spend huge amounts on transport, accommodation, and treatment in private hospitals.
The situation left many households financially strained, with some forced to postpone critical medical procedures.
However, the county’s recent investment in modern healthcare infrastructure is changing the narrative. Through the upgrading of county hospitals and the acquisition of modern medical equipment, residents can now access several specialised services closer to home.
Speaking during an inspection tour of healthcare facilities, Governor Wavinya said her administration is committed to building a strong healthcare system that prioritises ordinary wananchi.
She noted that quality healthcare should not be a privilege reserved for those who can afford expensive private treatment.

According to county officials, Machakos Level 5 Hospital and other health facilities have received advanced diagnostic machines, theatre equipment and improved laboratory facilities aimed at enhancing patient care.
The county has also expanded maternal healthcare services and increased staffing levels to handle the growing demand for treatment.
Medical experts within the county say the investments are already making a significant difference. Patients who previously travelled long distances for scans and surgeries can now receive services within hours, reducing delays that sometimes worsened medical conditions.
Residents have welcomed the developments, saying the improved services are saving them both time and money. Some families revealed that they previously sold property or borrowed heavily to finance treatment outside the county.
With specialised services now available locally, many say they are finally able to access healthcare without falling into financial distress.
Health sector stakeholders have also praised the county government’s approach, arguing that strengthening county healthcare systems is key to achieving universal health coverage in Kenya.
They noted that devolved units play a critical role in ensuring citizens access affordable and efficient medical care.
Governor Wavinya has maintained that her administration will continue investing in healthcare infrastructure, staff training, and modern equipment to ensure Machakos becomes a leading medical hub in the region.
As the county expands its healthcare capacity, thousands of residents are expected to benefit from reduced medical costs, faster treatment, and improved access to life saving specialised services.
