Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has strongly dismissed claims that her administration plans to replace the historic Tala Dam with a bus park.

She termed the allegations as propaganda meant to mislead the public and create unnecessary tension among residents.

Speaking amid growing public debate, Governor Ndeti said there is no plan whatsoever to convert the decades old dam into a matatu terminus. She insisted that her government remains committed to protecting and restoring the vital water resource.

She emphasized that Tala Dam is an important environmental and social asset whose preservation is a top priority for the county.

Our priority is to protect and restore Tala Dam by ensuring the water remains clean and safe,” Ndeti stated, adding that her administration has never proposed, discussed, or approved any project aimed at replacing the dam with a bus park.

The governor noted that misinformation surrounding the issue had caused anxiety among residents, traders and environmental advocates. This prompted her to clarify the county’s position.

She urged members of the public to seek accurate information from official county channels. They should not rely on rumors circulating on social media and informal forums.

According to Ndeti, the Machakos County Government is focusing on sustainable environmental management. This includes the rehabilitation of water bodies and the protection of natural ecosystems.

She revealed that plans are underway to enhance the dam’s surroundings through conservation measures. They will use improved waste management. Community sensitization will also prevent pollution.

Tala Dam has served generations of residents as a key water source. It has recently been at the center of public discourse. This follows claims that it would be cleared to pave the way for transport infrastructure.

Environmental groups and local traders had raised concerns about the potential loss of a heritage site and the environmental impact such a move would have.

Governor Ndeti reassured residents that development and environmental conservation are not mutually exclusive, saying her administration is committed to balanced growth that safeguards natural resources while improving livelihoods.

She also warned against what she described as deliberate attempts to politicize development issues for personal or political gain.

“As a county, we cannot sacrifice our environment on the altar of propaganda,” she said, calling for unity and constructive engagement as Machakos pursues sustainable development.
