Speaking during a recent political interview, Sifuna said discussions around transition in the party have been ongoing and, at times, delicate, given ODM’s long history and its central role in Kenya’s opposition politics.

He emphasized that the issue of succession is not driven by personal ambition but by the need to ensure continuity, stability, and adherence to the party constitution.

According to Sifuna, his engagement with Oburu Odinga was part of broader consultations aimed at ensuring that any leadership changes within ODM are handled in an orderly and transparent manner.

He noted that he raised the idea of allowing Oburu, who is one of the senior most figures in the Odinga political family, to play a consultative role in identifying or endorsing a suitable candidate for the Secretary General position.

He, however, stressed that such discussions should not be interpreted as a formal succession plan already in motion, clarifying that ODM’s internal processes remain guided by its constitution and organs of decision-making.

Sifuna added that no individual, regardless of seniority or political lineage, has the authority to unilaterally determine leadership outcomes within the party.

The remarks come at a time when speculation over ODM’s future leadership structure has intensified, especially as the party continues to reposition itself ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.

Questions about succession have also been fuelled by the political stature of party leader Raila Odinga, whose long dominance in opposition politics has made internal transition discussions increasingly significant.

Sifuna insisted that ODM’s strength lies in its institutional framework rather than individual personalities, arguing that orderly transitions are essential for the party’s survival and relevance in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.

He further called on party members to avoid factionalism and instead focus on strengthening unity and internal democracy.

Political analysts note that Sifuna’s remarks highlight the growing conversation within ODM about generational change and leadership renewal.

However, they also caution that such discussions often trigger internal sensitivities, especially in a party with deep historical roots and strong loyalty networks.

As ODM continues to navigate internal dynamics, Sifuna maintained that his priority remains strengthening the party’s structures and ensuring that any future leadership changes are handled in a manner that preserves cohesion and political direction.
