Gachagua Drops Explosive Allegations from the US, Claims Top Government Officials Behind Editor’s Abduction

NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a scathing statement from the United States regarding the high-profile abduction of Standard Media Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich.

In a fiery public address directed at Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Gachagua claimed that the National Police Service has been hijacked by senior state officials and alleged that Kiprotich was targeted to block an upcoming journalistic exposé.

Addressing Inspector General Kanja as a “flower girl leading a shell,” the former Deputy President dismissed any police probe into the incident, asserting that the IG exercises no real command over his forces.

“That investigation, like all the others you have ordered, will go nowhere because it was done by police officers outside your command,” Gachagua stated, alleging that security operations are currently being directed by Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Internal Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo with the concurrence of President William Ruto.

Alleged Mau Forest Scandal Behind Abduction

According to Gachagua, the editor was abducted to suppress an investigation into a multi-million-shilling compensation scam involving Mau Forest evictees from the Kipsigis community.

Gachagua alleged that officials within the National Government Administration, under the direction of Murkomen and Omollo, diverted compensation funds to brokers and proxies, leaving victimized families destitute.

Kiprotich was reportedly preparing a detailed, blow-by-blow investigative report on the alleged theft when top government figures intervened.

Gachagua claimed that a late-night Monday meeting between President Ruto and Murkomen sealed the editor’s fate, leading to orders for the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), headed by Mohamed Amin, to place Kiprotich under 24-hour surveillance.

Gachagua further alleged that a secret 60-member rogue police unit—coordinated by a recalled retired officer named Zachary Kariuki—executed the abduction.

He claimed the team was originally instructed to eliminate Kiprotich, but aborted the plan after the abduction was caught on camera, sparking immediate public outcry.

Rogue Police Squad and ICC Warning

The former Deputy President tied the same police unit to a series of extrajudicial actions, including the abduction of a businessman in Mlolongo, the death of Rachel Wandeto, and previous violent attacks on churches in Witima, Mwiki, and Kariobangi, as well as unrest in Ol Kalou.

Calling out the Inspector General’s failure to publish previous investigative reports, Gachagua declared that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is practically “dead” and that the rule of law in Kenya has been suspended.

Closing his statement with a stark warning, Gachagua suggested that police leadership and executive officials would ultimately face international accountability: “I can see you crying at the International Criminal Court in The Hague next year.”

Neither the National Police Service nor the named Ministry officials have publicly responded to the explosive claims. However, the allegations have intensified public debate surrounding press freedom, police accountability, and state security operations in the country.
