Fuel Crisis Fears Grow as Rwanda Announces Sharp Increase in Diesel and Petrol Prices

KIGALI, Rwanda — Motorists and businesses across Rwanda are set to feel the impact of significantly higher transport and operating costs after the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) announced a sharp increase in fuel prices under its latest fuel price review.

The new prices, which took effect immediately, saw diesel register the steepest increase, rising by RWF 64 per litre.

Petrol prices were also adjusted upwards, marking one of the most substantial fuel price reviews in recent months.

According to RURA, the adjustments were necessitated by changes in global oil market dynamics, increased importation costs, and fluctuations in international fuel prices.

The regulator said the review was aimed at ensuring the sustainability of fuel supply across the country while reflecting prevailing market conditions.

Under the new pricing structure, transport operators, logistics companies, manufacturers and ordinary motorists are expected to face increased expenses.

Diesel, which powers the majority of commercial vehicles and public transport fleets, is particularly critical to Rwanda’s economy, meaning the price hike could have far reaching effects on the cost of goods and services.

Economists have warned that the increase may trigger a ripple effect across various sectors.

Higher transport costs are likely to be passed on to consumers through increased prices of food, construction materials and other essential commodities.

“The rise in diesel prices will inevitably affect supply chains and distribution networks. Businesses may be forced to adjust prices to accommodate the increased operational costs,” said one Kigali-based economic analyst.

Public transport operators have also expressed concern over the latest review, saying the increase could squeeze profit margins and potentially lead to requests for fare adjustments if fuel costs remain elevated over an extended period.

RURA, however, maintained that the adjustments were necessary to align local prices with international market realities.

The regulator emphasized that it continues to monitor global fuel trends and will review prices periodically to ensure stability in the energy sector.

The announcement comes at a time when many countries in the East African region are grappling with fluctuating fuel prices driven by geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions and changing crude oil prices on the global market.

For households already facing rising living costs, the latest fuel hike may add further pressure on monthly budgets.

Analysts say the coming weeks will be critical in determining the broader economic impact of the adjustment, particularly on inflation and consumer spending.

As businesses and consumers adapt to the new fuel prices, attention will now turn to future market trends and whether global oil prices will stabilize enough to ease pressure on fuel costs in Rwanda and across the region.
