Tension within one of the country’s largest political parties simmered on Thursday after speculation spread over the status of a senior legislator, prompting swift clarification from the party’s top leadership.
The rumours, which gained traction across social media platforms and political talk shows, suggested disciplinary action had been taken against a prominent senator allied to the party.
The claims triggered debate among supporters and rivals alike, with some interpreting the alleged move as a sign of widening cracks within the formation.
However, the party leadership moved quickly to address the matter.
Gladys Wanga, the National Chairperson of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), dismissed the reports and clarified that Edwin Sifuna has not been expelled from the party.
Speaking amid mounting speculation, Wanga termed the reports as false and misleading, insisting that Sifuna remains a bona fide member of ODM and continues to serve in his capacity as Nairobi Senator under the party’s ticket.
There is no such decision by the party to expel Senator Sifuna. Those claims are unfounded,” she said, adding that official communication on disciplinary matters can only be issued through the party’s established structures.

The clarification comes at a time when ODM has been navigating internal debates over strategy, leadership direction and its relationship with other political formations.
Sifuna, who also serves as the party’s Secretary General, has in recent months been vocal on various national issues, occasionally sparking public debate over his remarks.
Political analysts say such speculation often emerges during periods of heightened political activity, particularly as parties recalibrate ahead of future electoral contests.
ODM, led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has historically experienced internal disagreements but has largely managed to maintain party unity through structured dialogue.
Wanga urged members and supporters to rely on official party statements rather than unverified online reports.
She emphasized that ODM remains committed to internal democracy and constructive engagement among its leaders.
The incident underscores the growing role of digital platforms in shaping political narratives, where unverified claims can quickly escalate into perceived crises.
Observers note that prompt clarification by party leadership can help prevent misinformation from deepening divisions or creating unnecessary uncertainty among supporters.
As of now, Sifuna continues to discharge his duties both in the Senate and within the party’s national leadership framework.
ODM officials reiterated that any disciplinary process, if ever initiated, would follow due procedure and be formally communicated.
For the party’s rank and file, the message from the chairperson was clear: there has been no expulsion, and the Nairobi Senator remains firmly within ODM’s fold.
