Mt. Kenya leaders have received a clear message from Kithure Kindiki, who says the Deputy President position is not something that can be auctioned or pressured into being handed out.

Speaking during a regional political forum, the Cabinet Secretary emphasized that leadership positions must be earned through merit and service, rather than political bargaining.

Kindiki, who has been vocal in recent months about the region’s political direction, warned that speculations about Mt. Kenya leaders pushing for a deputy presidency in upcoming elections were unfounded.

He urged local politicians to focus on building strong governance and development records rather than chasing positions.

The deputy presidency is not a trophy to be claimed. It is a responsibility, a duty to serve Kenyans,” Kindiki said. “We cannot allow discussions around leadership to distract us from the urgent matters facing our communities, including economic growth, infrastructure development, and youth empowerment.”

The remarks come amid renewed speculation over succession politics in Kenya, with various leaders from the Mt. Kenya region reportedly lobbying for key positions in national government.

Kindiki’s firm stance, however, signals that the Deputy President seat will not be part of any hasty political arrangements.

Political analysts say Kindiki’s statement could be aimed at managing expectations within his own community and sending a message to national players that Mt. Kenya politics must prioritize development over politicking.

This is a reminder that positions like the deputy presidency are about capability and service, not entitlement,” said one analyst who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Kindiki also encouraged young leaders in the region to focus on grassroots development initiatives.

He highlighted programs supporting agriculture, education, and entrepreneurship as examples of meaningful contributions that can pave the way for future leadership opportunities.

As the 2027 general elections approach, the Deputy President position remains a key discussion point in national politics.

Kindiki’s message, however, is clear speculation should not override the substance of leadership and the responsibility to serve citizens effectively.

Mt. Kenya residents and political watchers will be watching closely to see how local leaders respond to this firm directive and whether the region will unite behind service oriented leadership or continue with political maneuvering.
