CNN Fact-Checker Debunks Trump’s Claims Over Presidential Salary Donating
WASHINGTON — CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale delivered a sharp rebuke on Wednesday following President Donald Trump’s latest statements regarding his presidential salary, debunking multiple false assertions made by the commander-in-chief.
Speaking during a recent appearance, Trump claimed he was the “only president” to donate his official salary while in office, briefly adding that George Washington “maybe” did as well. He further expressed frustration, alleging he “never got a story” from the media covering his salary donations during his first term and claiming he continues the practice in his second term.
Dale quickly corrected the record in a series of social media posts, pointing out that several former U.S. leaders set the precedent long before Trump. “It’s not true that no other president donated the official salary,” Dale wrote. “JFK and Hoover did.” Both Herbert Hoover and John F. Kennedy famously declined their presidential pay, directing the funds to charitable causes.

The fact-checker also cleared up misinformation regarding presidential compensation itself. After Trump claimed presidents receive $550,000 annually, Dale noted that the official salary remains $400,000 per year, though additional expense and travel allocations can bring total compensation closer to $550,000.
Addressing Trump’s claim of press neglect, Dale pointed out that major news outlets regularly reported on the president’s salary disclosures and quarterly donations throughout his first administration.
Regarding Trump’s current term, Dale noted that while Trump announced his initial 2025 paycheck went to the White House Historical Association, no documentation has been provided to verify ongoing donations. “His team wouldn’t provide any more info when I inquired,” Dale stated.
The White House has yet to provide further accounting details regarding the president’s second-term compensation.
