The forum, organised under the auspices of the United Nations through the UN-Habitat programme, brings together heads of state, policymakers, investors, urban planners, climate experts and development partners from across the world.

Discussions at the summit are expected to centre on affordable housing, climate resilience, smart cities, urban transport and sustainable infrastructure financing.

State House said President Ruto’s participation at the forum underscores Kenya’s commitment to advancing inclusive urban transformation and addressing the challenges facing rapidly growing towns and cities.

Kenya is expected to showcase several initiatives under the Kenya Kwanza administration, including the affordable housing programme, modernisation of urban infrastructure and expansion of public transport systems.

The Head of State is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with various world leaders and investors on the sidelines of the summit.

Government officials say the meetings are aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties, attracting investment opportunities and positioning Kenya as a leading economic hub in the region.

Ruto’s trip comes at a time when the government is pushing ahead with ambitious housing and urban renewal projects despite criticism from sections of the opposition and civil society groups over taxation and implementation concerns.

The administration has maintained that the housing programme will create employment opportunities while helping bridge the country’s housing deficit.

Analysts say Kenya’s presence at the forum could help the country secure partnerships in areas such as green energy, waste management, digital urban systems and climate-smart infrastructure.

Urban experts have also argued that African countries must play a greater role in shaping global conversations on urbanisation due to the continent’s fast-growing cities and youthful population.

The World Urban Forum is regarded as one of the most influential international conferences on urban issues. This year’s session is expected to attract thousands of delegates from governments, private sector organisations, research institutions and non-governmental organisations.

President Ruto is accompanied by senior government officials, including representatives from the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development.

He is expected to address the forum and outline Kenya’s vision for sustainable urban growth, affordable housing and economic transformation.

The President’s visit is also likely to strengthen Kenya’s diplomatic and economic cooperation with Azerbaijan and other participating nations as the country seeks more global partnerships to support development projects.
