A senior journalist has gone missing under disturbing circumstances tonight. His employer says unknown men snatched him off a major highway.
Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich disappeared along the Gilgil-Nakuru Highway. The abduction has sent shockwaves through Kenya’s media fraternity.
Standard Group CEO Chaacha Mwita confirmed the incident in an official statement. He said Kiprotich was seized shortly before 9:20pm while travelling to Nakuru. Mwita demanded Kiprotich’s immediate, safe, and unconditional release from his captors.
The identities of the abductors remain unclear, though suspicion has fallen on state security operatives. Mwita insisted the government bears full responsibility for Kiprotich’s safety. He stated protecting citizens’ lives is the state’s primary duty, not an afterthought.
This is not the first time Kiprotich has faced such danger. In June 2026, armed men in a Toyota Probox tried seizing him near Nakuru. He escaped by locking his doors and speeding off before they could pull him out.
Investigations later linked that failed attempt to detectives attached to a police intelligence unit based in Nakuru. The Committee to Protect Journalists condemned the June incident, noting it followed public criticism of Standard Group by President William Ruto.
Mwita has now called for a transparent, independent probe into both incidents. He questioned why nobody was held accountable for the earlier attempted abduction. He also urged renewed guarantees for journalist safety in Kenya.
The CEO appealed to several oversight bodies to intervene urgently. These include the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, and the Law Society of Kenya. He also named the Media Council of Kenya and the Committee to Protect Journalists among those he expects to act.
Kiprotich’s disappearance raises fresh alarm over press freedom in Kenya. Journalists across the country are now demanding swift action from authorities.
