According to government spokesperson Charles Owino, the decision was not simply about giving the National Police Service a new appearance. He explained that the previous uniform had a major practical weakness: it became dirty quickly and faded after relatively short use forcing the president to save police officers from a lot of washing and replacing.
Charles Owino noted that while some Kenyans often mocked the old police uniform because of its appearance, the officers themselves were not responsible for how it looked. Instead, he attributed the problem to the design and material used in making the uniform.
“Kenyans mocked the old police uniform,” Charles Owino said, explaining that the uniform’s tendency to get dirty and fade quickly was a design problem rather than a failure by police officers to maintain it all the time.
His remarks provide a different perspective on a change that has attracted significant public attention. For many Kenyans, the police uniform is more than clothing; it is an important symbol of authority, professionalism and the image of the country’s security services.
