The quiet hum of machines and the scent of fresh paint now define a facility that many residents have watched rise steadily over the past months.

What began as a fenced construction site within the hospital compound has transformed into a towering symbol of renewed hope for patients and medical staff alike.

Anticipation is building among healthcare workers as final touches are put in place ahead of its official launch.

The construction of the Modern Surgical Complex at Siaya County Referral Hospital has now been completed, with equipping currently underway in preparation for operationalization later this year.

The new facility is expected to significantly boost the county’s capacity to deliver specialized medical services and ease the strain on existing infrastructure.

Siaya Governor James Orengo hailed the completion of the structure as a transformative step in strengthening healthcare systems in the region.

He noted that the investment reflects the county government’s commitment to improving access to quality and affordable healthcare for residents.

The complex features four fully equipped operating theatres designed to handle a range of surgical procedures, from general surgery to more specialized interventions.

In addition, the facility houses a 10-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) and a fully stocked pharmacy.

These units are expected to streamline surgical processes and enhance patient safety by ensuring high standards of sterilization and post-operative care.

Health officials say the expansion will drastically reduce congestion that has long plagued the referral hospital.

Previously, patients requiring specialized procedures were often referred to facilities outside the county, leading to delays and additional financial burdens for families.

With the new complex in place, more residents will be able to access advanced surgical care closer to home.

Medical staff have welcomed the development, saying the increased theatre space and modern equipment will improve efficiency and reduce waiting times for critical operations.

The ICU component is also expected to strengthen emergency response capacity, particularly for accident victims and patients requiring intensive monitoring after major surgery.

Governor Orengo emphasized that equipping the facility is progressing on schedule, assuring residents that the county is working closely with partners to ensure the complex meets national healthcare standards before opening its doors to the public.

Once operational, the Modern Surgical Complex is projected to serve not only Siaya residents but also patients from neighboring counties, positioning the referral hospital as a key center for specialized care in the region.

As the county moves toward commissioning the facility later this year, residents are optimistic that the new complex will mark a turning point in healthcare delivery bringing advanced medical services, dignity, and hope closer to home.
