Tensions within the political leadership in the Mount Kenya region appeared to intensify over the weekend after sharp remarks were exchanged between senior leaders, drawing renewed attention to the growing rift that has increasingly played out in public forums.

While addressing residents during a public event in Meru County, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki used the opportunity to respond to persistent criticism from his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua, urging him to tone down his attacks and show respect for the Office of the Deputy President.

Kindiki told the crowd that leadership should be guided by dignity and responsibility rather than constant political confrontation.

He insisted that personal attacks directed at the office undermine the respect expected of national leadership positions.

The Deputy President further defended his performance in government, saying his record of service speaks for itself.

According to him, his track record in public service and leadership positions is significantly broader compared to that of Gachagua.

Kindiki pointed out that Gachagua served only one term as a Member of Parliament before rising to the position of Deputy President.

He contrasted that with his own political journey, highlighting what he described as years of dedicated service in government and leadership roles.

In a pointed remark that drew cheers from sections of the crowd, Kindiki also referenced the dramatic events that led to Gachagua’s removal from office following the historic Rigathi Gachagua impeachment.

He said the former Deputy President should focus on constructive engagement rather than attacking those currently serving in government.

Respect the office and allow those currently serving to do their work,” Kindiki told residents during the gathering.

The remarks come amid an increasingly heated political environment in the Mount Kenya region, where leaders aligned to different factions have continued trading accusations over leadership, development, and political influence.

Observers say the exchange reflects deeper political undercurrents as leaders position themselves ahead of future political contests, particularly with the region remaining a key battleground in national politics.

Despite the sharp remarks, Kindiki maintained that the government remains focused on delivering development projects and improving the livelihoods of citizens across the country.

He urged leaders to prioritize service to the people rather than engaging in divisive politics.

The Deputy President concluded his address by calling for unity among leaders in the region, saying political differences should not distract from the responsibility of serving Kenyans.

However, with the latest public rebuttal now adding fuel to an already simmering rivalry, analysts say the political contest between Kindiki and Gachagua could continue shaping the political dynamics within the Mount Kenya region in the months ahead.
