Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has announced plans for a diplomatic visit to Russia as Kenya steps up efforts to safeguard the welfare of its citizens affected by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

Speaking during a briefing on Kenya’s foreign policy priorities, Mudavadi said the proposed visit is part of wider engagements aimed at strengthening diplomatic channels and ensuring that Kenyans living, studying or working in conflict affected regions receive adequate protection and assistance.

He noted that the government has been closely monitoring the situation in Eastern Europe since the war began, with particular attention on the safety of Kenyan nationals.

According to Mudavadi, Kenya has maintained consistent communication with its missions and partners in the region to track the status of citizens who may be at risk.

He said the planned visit to Russia would provide an opportunity to engage directly with Russian authorities on issues affecting Kenyans, including access to consular services, travel arrangements and safety guarantees amid ongoing hostilities.

The Prime Cabinet Secretary emphasized that Kenya’s approach remains guided by diplomacy and dialogue, adding that the country continues to uphold its longstanding foreign policy principles, including respect for international law, peaceful resolution of disputes and the protection of civilians during armed conflicts.

He reiterated Kenya’s call for a peaceful end to the war, noting that prolonged fighting has had far reaching humanitarian and economic consequences beyond the immediate region.

Mudavadi also acknowledged that the conflict has disrupted education and employment for some Kenyans, particularly students enrolled in institutions within the region and professionals working in related sectors.

He said the government has been exploring options to support affected individuals, including facilitating relocations where necessary and engaging host governments to address emerging challenges.

While details of the Russia visit, including timelines and the scope of discussions, are yet to be finalized.

Mudavadi indicated that the engagement would complement Kenya’s broader diplomatic efforts with both regional and global partners.

He stressed that protecting Kenyan citizens abroad remains a top priority for the government, regardless of the geopolitical complexities involved.

The announcement comes as Kenya continues to balance its international relations amid shifting global dynamics, seeking to maintain constructive ties while advocating for peace and stability.

Mudavadi said further updates would be shared once arrangements for the visit are confirmed.
