Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has issued a stern warning to politicians accused of stoking division and inciting violence, insisting that Kenya’s political space must be anchored on ideas rather than hostility.

Speaking during a public engagement forum, Kindiki said the government would not tolerate leaders who seek to divide Kenyans along ethnic or political lines for selfish gain.

He emphasized that the country has made significant progress in strengthening democratic institutions and safeguarding peace and that such gains must not be undermined by reckless rhetoric.

We will not allow you to incite Kenyans against each other because politics is about ideas, not violence,” the Deputy President said, in remarks widely interpreted as a response to recent heated political exchanges across the country.

Kindiki noted that Kenya’s history offers painful lessons about the consequences of divisive politics.

He said leaders have a moral and constitutional obligation to promote unity, especially at a time when the country is grappling with economic challenges that require collective effort and sober debate.

The Deputy President urged political actors to focus on presenting alternative policies and development agendas rather than mobilizing supporters through inflammatory statements.

According to him, healthy competition in a democracy should be based on convincing citizens through well articulated plans, not threats or propaganda.

He further assured Kenyans that security agencies are on high alert to ensure peace is maintained in all parts of the country.

While affirming the constitutional right to assemble and express dissent, Kindiki cautioned that such freedoms must be exercised within the confines of the law.

Freedom of expression does not mean freedom to cause chaos. We must protect our democracy by rejecting violence in all its forms,” he said.

His remarks come amid rising political temperatures as leaders position themselves ahead of future electoral contests.

Kindiki also called on young people to resist manipulation by politicians seeking to use them as instruments of violence.

He encouraged the youth to demand accountability and issue-based campaigns from those seeking leadership positions.

Political observers note that the Deputy President has increasingly positioned himself as a defender of law and order, framing stability as a prerequisite for economic transformation.

He reiterated that the government remains committed to dialogue but warned that incitement would attract firm legal consequences.

As political activity intensifies across the country, Kindiki’s message underscores the delicate balance between robust democratic debate and the need to preserve national cohesion.

Whether his warning will cool tensions or further inflame partisan exchanges remains to be seen, but the call for issue based politics has once again taken center stage in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
