Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a stern warning to politicians over the resurgence of criminal gangs in the country, cautioning that the situation could spiral out of control if left unchecked.

Speaking during a recent public forum, Murkomen highlighted the evolving nature of these gangs, emphasizing that they often originate from seemingly harmless beginnings.

Some of these gangs are yours, while others belong to your rivals,” Murkomen said, stressing the political dimension that has often been overlooked in discussions about crime. He explained that many young men begin as bouncers or informal security personnel, gradually evolving into violent criminal outfits if political patronage or negligence allows it.

He also outlined the pattern of transformation, noting that these groups typically progress from bouncers to goons and eventually full fledged gangs with significant influence in their neighborhoods.

He warned that politicians who indirectly support such groups, even for protection or political advantage, risk destabilizing their constituencies and undermining public safety.

Murkomen also called on law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to dismantle these networks before they reach a stage where they can influence political outcomes.

It is not just about crime on the streets. This is about how politics and criminality intersect. Ignoring this reality will have severe consequences for our democracy and public order,” he saidAnalysts note that criminal groups often exploit political rivalries and loyalties, making them harder to dismantle and creating long-term security challenges for the country.

Murkomen urged politicians to take a proactive stance by distancing themselves from any associations with these groups and instead supporting community programs that provide youth with alternatives to crime.
