A 52-year-old resident of Luoka Village, Madungu Sub-Location in Ugunja, is set to receive compensation from the Government.

This is after he killed a large python that had attacked and killed his dog late last month.

Mr Charles Osore, a local farmer, intervened when a giant python launched a deadly attack on his valued pet.

The pet is one of the village’s main deterrents against crop damaging monkeys.

Despite his efforts, the dog was killed in the encounter, prompting Osore to kill the snake in self-defence.

The unusual incident spread quickly through Ugunja. It drew national attention after Osore carried both the dead python and his dog to the Sigomere Police Station.

Responding to community concern, a team from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) visited Osore at his home.

Residents were reportedly stunned by his actions, but the dramatic gesture underscored the severity of human-wildlife conflict in the area.

Senior Warden Grace Kariuki led the team. She is from Kisumu and Siaya counties.

The team’s mission was to support him and kick-start the compensation process.

Warden Kariuki commended Osore for his cooperation with authorities. He confirmed that the government would stand with him in the matter.

We want to thank him for bringing the dead python (trophy) to the government. We have come with the relevant compensation forms, and when the time comes, he will be compensated,” she said.

The wildlife officials also pledged to conduct awareness sessions in Ugunja and surrounding villages to educate residents on how to report and handle wildlife encounters safely.

Residents welcomed the government’s intervention and expressed relief that the matter was being taken seriously.

“It is good that they have come to see us,” said one neighbour. “Now we know where to report incidents like this in future.”

Osore expressed gratitude. He urged wildlife authorities to act swiftly when villagers raise concerns. This is especially important when attacks on livestock and pets are involved.
