The United States has issued a stern warning to Iran, saying there would be “grave consequences” if the Iranian government continues to kill protesters amid one of the country’s most intense waves of civil unrest in years.
The message was delivered through White House channels this week. It underscores escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran. These tensions are over Tehran’s crackdown on anti-government demonstrations.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that President Donald Trump and his team communicated directly to Iranian authorities that continued lethal force against civilians would draw a serious U.S. response.
As a result of that pressure, she said, at least 800 executions that had been scheduled to take place were halted a development the administration described as a potential de escalation in a volatile situation.
The warning comes amid nationwide protests that began in late December as a response to severe economic hardship, including high inflation and shortages of basic goods.
The demonstrations quickly morphed into broad calls for political reform, with protesters challenging the theocratic leadership.
