Think Before You Vote! Kalonzo Says Leadership Choices Decide Kenya’s Fate

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called on Kenyans to take a deeper, more reflective approach when choosing their leaders, warning that electoral decisions carry long term consequences for the country’s political stability, economic growth, and social cohesion.

Speaking during a public engagement, Kalonzo said leadership is not merely about personalities or campaign slogans but about values, integrity and the ability to serve the nation faithfully.

The former Vice President emphasized that every election presents Kenyans with a defining moment, arguing that poor choices at the ballot box often translate into years of hardship, broken promises, and weakened institutions.

According to Kalonzo, leadership failures do not occur by accident but are often the result of voters overlooking critical issues such as competence, accountability and respect for the rule of law.

He urged citizens to interrogate the track records of those seeking office, noting that true leadership should be demonstrated through service, not rhetoric.

Kalonzo said leaders must be measured by how they treat public resources, how they respond to the needs of ordinary citizens and how committed they are to national unity rather than personal or political gain.

The Wiper leader also linked leadership choices to Kenya’s broader democratic journey, warning that repeated mistakes in elections risk eroding public trust in governance.

He noted that when citizens lose confidence in their leaders, the result is growing frustration, division and disengagement from civic processes. This, he said, weakens democracy and leaves the country vulnerable to instability.

Kalonzo further challenged young voters, who form a significant portion of the electorate, to recognize the power they hold.

He said the youth must resist being swayed by short term incentives and instead focus on the kind of future they want to inherit.

Leadership choices today determine opportunities tomorrow,” he said, stressing that unemployment, high living costs, and inequality are often symptoms of leadership failure.

Without mentioning specific individuals, Kalonzo criticized what he described as a culture of electing leaders based on ethnicity, handouts, or political excitement, arguing that such tendencies undermine national progress.

He called for a shift toward issue based politics where ideas, policies, and character take center stage.

As Kenya continues to navigate complex economic and political challenges, Kalonzo’s remarks serve as a reminder that the power to shape the nation’s destiny ultimately lies with the people.

He urged Kenyans to treat elections not as routine events, but as serious national decisions whose impact is felt long after the votes are counted.
