A vehicle attached to the security convoy of Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale was involved in a road accident on Sunday at the busy Otonglo area along the Kisumu–Busia Highway, causing a brief scare among motorists and residents.

The incident occurred as the motorcade was travelling along the highway, a key transport corridor linking Kisumu and Busia.

According to preliminary reports, one of the vehicles in the convoy collided with another road user near the Otonglo trading centre, an area known for heavy traffic and frequent roadside activity.

Witnesses said the crash caused momentary confusion along the road as security personnel quickly moved in to secure the scene and manage traffic.

Several vehicles were forced to slow down or temporarily stop as officers assessed the situation.

At the time of the accident, the convoy was reportedly escorting the Health CS during official engagements in the region.

However, it was not immediately clear whether the Cabinet Secretary himself was in the particular vehicle involved in the crash.

Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud bang before security officers rushed out of the convoy vehicles to check on those involved.

Some residents who operate small businesses near the roadside gathered briefly at the scene, though they were later asked to disperse by security officers.

There was a loud impact and people rushed to see what had happened. Security officers quickly controlled the situation and directed vehicles away from the scene,” said one trader who witnessed the incident.

Authorities said emergency response teams were alerted soon after the crash.

Police officers arrived to document the accident and restore normal traffic flow along the highway, which is often busy with cargo trucks, public service vehicles and private motorists travelling between western Kenya and the border.

Initial reports indicated that the injuries sustained, if any, were not immediately confirmed, though the accident appeared to involve minor damage to the affected vehicles.

Investigations were launched to determine the exact cause of the collision.

Security convoys involving senior government officials typically move at controlled speeds and are escorted by trained personnel tasked with ensuring safe passage along major roads.

However, road accidents involving motorcades occasionally occur due to traffic congestion, sudden stops by other motorists, or miscommunication on busy highways.

The Kisumu–Busia Highway is a vital transport route connecting Kenya to neighbouring Uganda through the Busia border point.

The road is frequently used by cargo trucks transporting goods across the East African region, making traffic safety a constant concern.

Police urged motorists to remain cautious and always give way to official motorcades to prevent similar incidents.

Investigations into the Otonglo crash were ongoing by Sunday evening as authorities worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.
