Samburu County is in mourning following the death of Porro Ward Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Patrick Lerte, who passed away on Sunday morning, December 28, while undergoing treatment at the Maralal Referral Hospital.
The death of the legislator was confirmed through an internal memo issued by the Samburu County Assembly Clerk, Fred Lenapeer.
According to the memo, Lerte died in the early hours of Sunday, though details surrounding the illness that led to his hospitalization have not yet been made public.
Preliminary information indicates that the MCA had been unwell for several days prior to his death and was receiving medical attention before he succumbed.
His passing has sent shockwaves across Samburu County, particularly in Porro Ward, where residents described him as an approachable and hardworking leader.
Patrick Lerte was first elected into office in 2022 on an Amani National Congress (ANC) party ticket.
The ANC party later merged with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) earlier this year.
During his tenure at the county assembly, Lerte served as the Chairperson of the County Assembly Committee on Lands and Physical Planning, a role in which he was widely praised for his dedication and commitment to public service.
Samburu West Member of Parliament Naisula Lesuuda was among the first leaders to pay tribute to the late MCA.
In her condolence message, Lesuuda expressed sympathy to Lerte’s family, colleagues at the assembly, and residents of Porro Ward, noting that Samburu County had lost a devoted public servant.
Lerte’s death comes barely two weeks after the passing of another ANC-affiliated legislator, nominated MP Denar Joseph Hamisi, marking a period of sorrow for the political party and the wider political fraternity.
As tributes continue to pour in, leaders and residents alike have remembered Patrick Lerte as a selfless leader whose service to the people of Samburu will be deeply missed.
