A patient admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), one of Kenya’s top referral health facilities, was allegedly murdered inside the hospital premises in a chilling incident that has left many talking.
According to a statement released by the hospital, the patient, who had been admitted to the facility on July 11, 2025, was found unresponsive with a deep cut on his throat at around 4 PM on Thursday, July 17. He was discovered by medical staff shortly after the designated visiting hours had ended in male Ward 7B.
KNH confirmed that the patient had appeared to be in stable condition during visiting hours, and nothing unusual had been reported by his family or hospital staff at the time. However, shortly after his visitors left, medics found him lying in a pool of blood, unresponsive and with visible injuries.
Hospital authorities quickly alerted police, who began investigations into the gruesome killing. Preliminary inquiries led to the arrest of a male suspect who was previously a patient at the same facility.
“The suspect was treated and discharged from the hospital but had no relatives or place to go,” a police source told reporters. “He remained within the hospital premises, frequently moving around the wards and sleeping in vacant spaces, which raised no major concerns at first.”
The arrested individual is believed to have gained unauthorized access to Ward 7B, where the attack occurred. Police are investigating whether there was a motive or mental health issues involved. The suspect remains in custody as detectives from Nairobi County and KNH security officials continue piecing together the timeline of events.
The hospital, in its statement, expressed deep regret over the incident and assured the public that they are cooperating fully with authorities. “We have launched a comprehensive internal review of our security and monitoring systems to ensure such an incident never happens again,” said the hospital’s management.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been publicly released, pending notification of next of kin. Meanwhile, the hospital has increased security patrols and restricted movement in certain wards as investigations continue.
The Ministry of Health has also called for an urgent report from KNH management, as the nation awaits further updates on the rare and disturbing incident inside Kenya’s premier national hospital.
