Not Under Pressure:Gachagua Says Opposition Will Unveil Flagbearer at the Right Time

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed growing pressure for the opposition to name a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto, insisting that the coalition is under no obligation to rush a decision simply to satisfy public curiosity or political noise.

Speaking during a public engagement, Gachagua said the opposition has learned from past elections and will not make the mistake of revealing its strategy too early.

According to him, announcing a candidate prematurely would only hand President Ruto and his allies unnecessary political ammunition.

We are not in a hurry to reveal our candidate to face Ruto. There is a right time for everything,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua explained that the opposition is currently focused on building internal unity, strengthening grassroots structures and listening to the concerns of ordinary Kenyans who are struggling with the high cost of living, unemployment and economic pressure.

He argued that leadership is not just about personalities but about presenting a credible alternative vision for the country.

The former DP accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of trying to force the opposition into early declarations as a diversion from what he described as failed economic promises.

He said the government is more interested in political theatrics than addressing the real issues affecting citizens.

They want us to name a candidate so they can attack individuals instead of answering questions about hunger, taxes, and broken promises,” he added.

Gachagua also dismissed claims that delaying the announcement signals disunity within the opposition.

On the contrary, he said consultations are ongoing and that all leaders involved have agreed that the presidency will be decided through consensus when the time is right.

He maintained that when the opposition eventually unveils its flagbearer, it will be a collective decision backed by a united team and a clear agenda focused on economic recovery, national cohesion and inclusive governance.

Political analysts view Gachagua’s remarks as part of a broader strategy to keep President Ruto guessing while the opposition consolidates support across regions.

By avoiding early declarations, the coalition hopes to prevent internal rivalries and external sabotage.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, one thing is clear: the opposition is choosing patience over pressure.

And if Gachagua’s message is anything to go by, President Ruto may have to wait longer before knowing exactly who will stand in his way.
