Ugandan police have dismissed reports. These reports alleged that opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi was abducted overnight. Kyagulanyi is the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate, popularly known as Bobi Wine. He was reportedly taken to an unknown location.
They described the claims as false and deliberately misleading.
The police issued a strongly worded statement. They clarified that Bobi Wine was neither arrested nor abducted. The statement accused those spreading the reports of attempting to inflame public tension during a sensitive political period.
The police claim the allegations are “deceitful and inciteful.” They are said to aim at portraying security agencies as brutal. They also depict them as violators of the rights of a political candidate.
These allegations are intended to mislead the public and unfairly depict security agencies as lawless and oppressive,” the police statement read, adding that such claims risk undermining public trust and provoking unnecessary unrest.

Reports of Bobi Wine’s alleged abduction began circulating widely on social media late at night, triggering concern among his supporters and renewed scrutiny of the conduct of security forces.
Some opposition figures claimed his communication had gone silent, fueling speculation and tension across the country.
However, police insisted that Bobi Wine remained at his residence and was not in their custody at any time.
They urged political actors and members of the public to verify information before sharing it. They warned that misinformation could escalate into violence.
The police further emphasized that security agencies remain committed to respecting human rights. They are dedicated to upholding the law. This includes protecting the freedoms of all political candidates, regardless of affiliation.
“We are duty-bound to ensure safety and order, not to intimidate or silence lawful political activity,” the statement added.
The incident comes amid heightened political temperatures, with opposition groups repeatedly accusing security agencies of harassment, surveillance, and intimidation.
Authorities, on the other hand, have maintained that all security deployments are lawful and aimed solely at maintaining public order.
As the political process continues, observers note that misinformation and rapid online reporting are increasingly shaping public perception.
Analysts warn that unverified claims, especially involving high-profile political figures, can easily spark panic and deepen divisions.
For now, police have called for calm, restraint, and responsible communication, reiterating that no abduction of Bobi Wine took place and urging the public to rely on official channels for accurate information.
