A fresh exchange within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has exposed simmering tensions among senior party figures. These tensions arose after Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang publicly took aim at Siaya Governor James Orengo over his stance on party leadership.

Kajwang questioned Orengo’s recent comments and political posture within the party.

In a pointed address, the outspoken legislator asked Orengo a direct question. He inquired why Orengo appeared envious and jealous of ODM Party Leader Dr. Oburu Odinga, a statement that immediately drew attention and reignited debate over internal dynamics in the party.

Kajwang defended Dr. Oburu Odinga as a seasoned politician. He emphasized that his leadership was grounded in experience. He mentioned his loyalty to the party. Dr. Odinga also has a deep understanding of ODM’s ideological foundation.

He argued that Oburu’s elevation within the party structures was intentional. It was not accidental or imposed. It resulted from decades of sacrifice and service to the ODM movement. It also stemmed from the wider push for democratic reforms in the country.

Without mentioning Orengo by name repeatedly, Kajwang accused some senior leaders of engaging in subtle power struggles that risked undermining party unity.

He warned that internal rivalries, if left unchecked, could weaken ODM. This is a critical time when the party needs cohesion. The party must effectively play its role in national politics. It also needs to prepare for future electoral contests.

The Ruaraka MP further urged ODM leaders to resolve differences through established party organs rather than public exchanges, saying unity was critical as the party navigates a complex political environment.

He cautioned that personal ambitions should not be allowed to overshadow collective goals or the legacy of the party’s founding ideals.

Governor Orengo, a long serving ODM stalwart and respected constitutional lawyer, has in recent weeks been vocal about governance, accountability and the direction of political parties in Kenya.

While ODM has historically managed internal disagreements without major splits, observers note that how the party handles such public confrontations could shape its image and internal stability in the coming months.

ODM officials insist the party remains united, stressing that robust debate has always been part of its culture.
