Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has commissioned a new Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) block at Ebusambe Primary School in Khalaba Ward, Matungu Sub-County, marking a significant milestone in the county’s push to strengthen foundational education.
The newly constructed two classroom facility is fully equipped and furnished with child friendly furniture designed to create a safe, stimulating and comfortable learning environment for young learners.
The project also includes a 5,000 litre water tank to ensure reliable access to clean water, two administrative offices, a store, washrooms and a modern kitchen, reflecting a holistic approach to early childhood education infrastructure.
Speaking during the official commissioning ceremony, Governor Barasa reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in ECDE as a cornerstone of long term educational success.
He noted that early learning plays a critical role in shaping children’s cognitive, social and emotional development, adding that quality facilities are essential to delivering meaningful outcomes.
Our focus is to ensure that every child in Kakamega County gets a strong start in life. By investing in modern ECDE infrastructure, we are not only improving learning conditions but also supporting teachers and parents in nurturing the next generation,” Barasa said.

The governor highlighted that the Ebusambe Primary School project is part of a wider county programme aimed at upgrading ECDE centres across Kakamega.
The initiative targets improved classrooms, sanitation, water access and learning materials, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Local leaders and education officials present at the event welcomed the new facility, saying it would help decongest existing classrooms and enhance service delivery.
Teachers at the school expressed optimism that the modern learning spaces and support facilities would improve attendance, hygiene standards and overall learning outcomes for ECDE pupils.
Parents and community members also praised the county government for prioritising early childhood education, noting that the inclusion of a kitchen and adequate water storage would contribute to better nutrition and health for young learners.
As Kakamega County continues to roll out similar projects, the commissioning of the Ebusambe Primary School ECDE block stands as a clear signal of the devolved unit’s focus on education as a driver of social and economic transformation.
With improved facilities now in place, learners in Khalaba Ward are set to benefit from a stronger, more supportive foundation for their academic journey.
