DAP-Kenya party leader Eugene Wamalwa has formally declared his intention to vie for the presidency in the 2027 General Election, positioning himself as a potential challenger to President William Ruto.

Speaking during a public engagement, Wamalwa said he is ready for the contest and prepared to carry the banner of a united opposition if consensus is reached.

Wamalwa, a former Cabinet Secretary, said the country needs a new leadership direction anchored on unity, economic inclusion and respect for the rule of law.

He argued that the current administration has fallen short on key promises, particularly on the cost of living, youth unemployment and governance, creating an opportunity for alternative leadership.

I am ready to face President Ruto at the ballot in 2027,” Wamalwa said, adding that he is open to working with like minded leaders across the opposition to avoid splitting votes. He noted that past elections have shown the importance of unity among opposition parties, stressing that personal ambition should not override the broader goal of national change.

The DAP-K leader said consultations are ongoing with several opposition figures, including leaders from Azimio-affiliated parties and other regional outfits.

According to Wamalwa, the discussions are aimed at building a strong, issue based coalition that reflects Kenya’s diversity and responds to the concerns of ordinary citizens.

Wamalwa also used the opportunity to criticise President Ruto’s economic policies, claiming they have placed an undue burden on households through high taxes and rising prices of basic commodities.

He said a united opposition would present a clear alternative economic plan focused on job creation, support for small businesses and equitable development across all regions.

While it remains unclear whether he will eventually clinch a coalition ticket, his announcement signals growing momentum within opposition ranks to rally around a single candidate early.

As the political temperature slowly rises, Wamalwa said his focus will be on grassroots mobilisation and policy articulation rather than early campaigns.

He called on Kenyans to remain engaged and hold leaders accountable, insisting that 2027 will be a defining moment for the country’s democracy.
