Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has suggested that a deal in Kenya’s opposition camp may hinge on the presidential ticket.
Speaking to the media, Gachagua emphasized that unity within the coalition could only be achieved if the presidential seat is negotiated in a way that respects each leader’s ambitions.
Within the opposition coalition, the point where we will have an understanding is the presidential seat,” Gachagua stated. “If we clash there, we cannot reach an agreement. But if it is not my turn, I will support the agreed candidate.”
His comments come amid mounting speculation about the ongoing jockeying for the top spot in the opposition.
Political commentator Esther Muthoni observed, “Gachagua is sending a clear message.
He’s flexible but not powerless. By leaving the door open for compromise, he positions himself as a kingmaker, someone whose support could make or break the coalition’s presidential bid.
Observers say that without a clear roadmap for leadership roles, internal disputes could weaken the alliance’s electoral prospects.

“It is no secret that opposition unity is fragile,” said political analyst James Mwangi.
Statements like Gachagua’s are meant to reassure followers and potential allies that negotiations are ongoing, and that a consensus can be reached without personal grudges dominating the conversation.
While Gachagua stopped short of naming potential candidates or specifying timelines, his message was unmistakable, cooperation is possible, but the presidential contest remains the pivotal factor.
The deputy president’s approach could signal a more pragmatic turn for the opposition, as leaders weigh personal ambition against the broader goal of presenting a united front against the ruling government.
With elections looming, the coming weeks are likely to witness intense behind the scenes discussions.
Gachagua’s position may well determine whether the opposition presents a cohesive alternative or enters the race divided, potentially handing the ruling party an easier path to victory.
For now, the ball is in the opposition’s court and Gachagua has made it clear that his support will follow careful calculation rather than automatic allegiance.
