Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared that he will throw his weight behind another opposition candidate in the 2027 General Election if circumstances prevent him from contesting for the presidency.
Speaking during a public engagement, Gachagua said his primary objective is to ensure that the opposition remains united and presents a formidable challenge against President William Ruto in the next election cycle.
He emphasized that the movement he is building is bigger than any individual and should continue regardless of whether he is on the ballot.
The former deputy president’s remarks come amid ongoing legal and political debates surrounding his impeachment and its potential implications on his future political ambitions.
While Gachagua has consistently maintained that he remains eligible to seek elective office, he acknowledged that political realities could force him to support another candidate should legal or constitutional barriers arise.
“I am prepared to support any credible opposition candidate who can deliver change for Kenyans if I am unable to run,” he said, adding that the opposition’s focus should remain on addressing economic challenges, unemployment and the high cost of living.

His statement is likely to intensify discussions within opposition circles as political leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 race.
Several figures have already been mentioned as possible contenders, with analysts predicting a highly competitive contest as alliances continue to take shape.
Political observers view Gachagua’s comments as a strategic move aimed at reassuring his supporters while keeping his options open.
By pledging support for another opposition figure if necessary, he signals a willingness to prioritize coalition-building over personal ambition.
The remarks also come at a time when opposition leaders are seeking to strengthen cooperation in a bid to avoid fragmentation that could benefit the ruling coalition.
Previous elections have demonstrated the challenges opposition groups face when multiple candidates split votes across regions.
Supporters attending the event welcomed Gachagua’s position, arguing that unity among opposition leaders would increase the chances of mounting an effective challenge in 2027.
Critics, however, questioned whether such unity would be achievable given the competing interests of various political factions.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his own political future, Gachagua insisted that he remains committed to remaining active in national politics and championing issues affecting ordinary Kenyans.
He reiterated that the opposition’s mission extends beyond individual personalities and should focus on offering alternative leadership and policies.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Gachagua’s latest declaration is expected to fuel fresh speculation about potential opposition alliances and the shape of the battle for State House in 2027.
