Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has dismissed criticism surrounding the amount allocated to young people under the NYOTA programme.
He insisted that the initiative has the capacity to transform livelihoods despite claims that the funds are insufficient.
While engaging youth groups, Kindiki said the focus should not be on the size of the allocation. Instead, focus on how effectively it is used to unlock economic opportunities.
The Deputy President noted that some critics have been quick to downplay the programme. They argue that the financial support offered to young entrepreneurs is too little. It does not make a meaningful difference.
However, he maintained that such views overlook the broader objective of the initiative. This objective is to empower youth to start income-generating ventures. It also aims to stabilize and expand these ventures.
Kindiki emphasized that many successful businesses began with modest capital and grew through discipline, innovation and sustained support.
He said the NYOTA programme is designed to provide a foundation. Young people can build upon this foundation. It is not a one-time solution to all economic challenges facing the youth.
He assured beneficiaries that the government remains fully committed to supporting their entrepreneurial journeys beyond the initial funding.
According to Kindiki, the programme is accompanied by capacity building measures, mentorship and linkages to markets aimed at ensuring long term success.
The goal is to help young people stand on their own feet,” Kindiki said. He added that the administration is focused on creating an enabling environment for youth-led enterprises to thrive.

The Deputy President also urged beneficiaries to use the funds prudently. He advised them to resist the temptation to spend the money on non-productive activities.
He encouraged young entrepreneurs to view the programme as a stepping stone toward sustainable economic independence.
The NYOTA programme is part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle youth unemployment and stimulate grassroots economic growth.
Officials are also expressing confidence that its impact will be felt across communities as beneficiaries grow their businesses and create jobs.
