Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has openly invited Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to join his party, intensifying political realignments amid growing internal wrangles within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Speaking during a televised interview on Thursday, Wamalwa said Sifuna is a bold, principled and progressive leader whose political values align with DAP-K’s reformist agenda.

He described the embattled ODM Secretary-General as a national asset who should not be silenced or frustrated for speaking his mind.

Edwin Sifuna has shown courage in defending democracy and accountability. If he ever feels that his space in ODM has been closed, DAP-K remains open to leaders who believe in issue based politics, Wamalwa said.

Sifuna has recently found himself at the center of a storm within ODM following attempts by a faction linked to the party’s broad-based cooperation wing to remove him from his secretary general position.

The power struggle has exposed deep divisions within ODM, pitting party traditionalists against those advocating closer cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration.

Although Sifuna has maintained that he remains firmly in ODM and was legitimately elected, political observers say Wamalwa’s invitation signals early maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general election.

DAP-K, which has been positioning itself as a home for leaders disillusioned by both government and opposition establishments, has increasingly criticized what it calls the commodification of political loyalty in Kenya’s major parties.

Wamalwa has been vocal against coalition politics driven by elite deals rather than public interest.

Analysts note that Sifuna’s entry into DAP-K if it were to happen would significantly boost the party’s national profile, particularly in urban and youth demographics where the Nairobi senator enjoys strong support due to his outspoken stance on governance, corruption and rule of law.

However, Sifuna has downplayed speculation about an imminent party switch, insisting that his focus remains on defending internal democracy within ODM.

“Political parties must respect their constitutions. That is the fight I am in,” he recently stated.

Still, the public invitation by Wamalwa adds another layer to Kenya’s fast evolving opposition politics, where shifting alliances, ideological battles, and succession calculations are already taking shape more than a year before formal campaigns begin.

Whether Sifuna stays to fight within ODM or charts a new path with DAP-K, one thing is clear his political future has become a key battleground in the broader struggle for control of Kenya’s opposition space.
