Political tensions within Kenya’s leadership ranks escalated over the weekend after sharp remarks directed at a former top government official during a public address in Meru County.

The comments, delivered before a crowd of local leaders and residents, signaled a deepening rift within a faction of leaders from the Mt Kenya region and raised fresh questions about the political direction of the area ahead of the next general election.

The gathering, which focused largely on development projects and unity among leaders, quickly turned political when Deputy President Kithure Kindiki addressed remarks made in recent weeks by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Kindiki used the platform to urge the former DP to exercise restraint in his public statements and to show respect to other leaders and residents of Meru County.

Kindiki warned that rhetoric suggesting that the current administration would only serve a single term was divisive and risked undermining the unity that leaders have been trying to build in the region.

According to the Deputy President, leaders should focus their energy on development and service delivery rather than engaging in political narratives that could sow unnecessary divisions among communities.

We must respect leaders and the people of Meru,” Kindiki said, emphasizing that the region deserves leadership that promotes unity and progress rather than confrontation.

He cautioned that continued conduct promoting the one-term narrative would not be tolerated, noting that such statements were not only misleading but also risked creating unnecessary political tension.

The remarks appear to be a direct response to recent statements by Gachagua, who has been vocal about political realignments within the Mt Kenya region and has repeatedly referenced the idea of a one-term presidency in national political discussions.

Kindiki maintained that Kenya’s leadership should remain focused on fulfilling campaign promises and delivering tangible development projects to citizens.

He said political debates should not distract leaders from the responsibility of improving livelihoods, building infrastructure, and addressing the economic challenges facing many Kenyans.

The Deputy President also called on residents of Meru and the broader Mt Kenya region to reject divisive politics and instead support initiatives aimed at accelerating development.

Observers say the exchange reflects growing political rivalry within influential circles in the region, which has historically played a significant role in shaping national politics.

While neither leader mentioned specific future political plans, analysts believe the ongoing exchanges could signal an early start to political positioning ahead of the 2027 Kenyan General Election.

For now, Kindiki insists that unity among leaders remains essential, urging politicians to engage in respectful dialogue while prioritizing the interests of citizens over personal or political disputes.
