Concerns have been raised over an unresolved rent dispute involving the late Beryl Lilian Achieng Mugwari Odinga, who lived in a house on Mwangi Road in Kileleshwa from 2013 until her death earlier this month.

According to information shared by a complainant, the property is owned by a Rwandese national, and rent arrears allegedly amount to Ksh 5,814,000.

The complainant claims that over the years, attempts by the landlord to recover the arrears through auctioneers were repeatedly frustrated.

On several occasions, auctioneers were reportedly denied access to the property by officers from Kilimani Police Station, preventing them from carrying out their duties.

It is further alleged that two days before Beryl Odinga’s death, auctioneers finally gained access to the residence, prompting a partial payment of approximately Ksh 180,000 by Raila Odinga Junior.

However, after her passing, a subsequent attempt by the landlord to recover the remaining balance was again unsuccessful.

In addition to rent arrears, the complainant alleges that outstanding water and electricity bills were left unpaid during the period of occupancy.

These claims have fueled public debate, particularly given Beryl Odinga’s profile as a former member of the Nairobi Water Board.

During her funeral service, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja announced that Beryl Odinga’s son would replace her on the Nairobi Water Board, a move that drew mixed reactions amid the unresolved private dispute.

The complainant further claims that Senator Oburu Odinga had indicated the outstanding balance would be settled after the burial, but says no action has been taken so far.

The situation has sparked discussion on social media, with some Kenyans calling for transparency and accountability, while others urge restraint, noting that the claims remain allegations that require proper legal resolution.
