Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has declared his ambition to become the next governor of Nairobi County, launching a scathing critique of the current county administration.
Speaking during a rally in the city, Owino claimed that his predecessor, Governor Johnson Sakaja, effectively abandoned his duties, leaving Nairobi residents without adequate leadership.
Governor Sakaja handed over his responsibilities to the president,” Owino said. “He was simply saying that he is tired, he can’t do this work, help me.”
According to Owino, the situation has forced the national government to step in, but this intervention has only highlighted systemic inefficiencies.
Owino accused the current county government of incompetence, insisting that Nairobi’s administrative challenges are not technical issues, as officials have often claimed.
An incompetent national government comes in to help an incompetent county government.
The governor became a different governor who cannot deliver services. They are saying Nairobi has technical issues, there is nothing technical about Nairobi,” he stated.
The MP painted a picture of a city struggling to meet the basic needs of its residents.
He pointed to gaps in service delivery, citing failures in infrastructure projects, revenue collection, and urban management.

According to him, residents have borne the brunt of mismanagement, leaving many frustrated and disillusioned.
Owino’s declaration comes amid growing political tension in Nairobi, where voters are increasingly demanding accountability and performance from their elected leaders.
“I have always believed in action over words. Nairobi deserves a governor who is present, accountable and capable of turning plans into results.
I am ready to step in and provide leadership that will truly deliver for the people,” Owino said.
The MP’s remarks mark the beginning of what is expected to be a heated political contest ahead of the next county elections.
With Nairobi being a key economic and political hub, Owino’s challenge signals a high-stakes battle that could reshape the city’s governance landscape.
Residents and political observers will be closely watching how the current county administration responds to these allegations and whether Owino can translate his criticism into a compelling campaign platform.
