The Chairperson of the African Union Commission has formally endorsed the outcome of Uganda’s recent presidential elections.
He congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election following the January 15, 2026 polls.
In a statement released on behalf of the continental body, African Union Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf commended the overall conduct of the elections.
He described them as a significant step in Uganda’s democratic journey.
Museveni was declared the winner after securing 71.61 per cent of the votes cast, extending his long political dominance in the East African nation.
Youssouf acknowledged the efforts of Uganda’s electoral institutions, security agencies and citizens.
He noted that the peaceful participation of voters demonstrated a commitment to democratic processes despite political tensions that surrounded the campaign period.

He praised Ugandans for exercising their civic duty in an orderly manner and for contributing to national stability.
The AU Chairperson also expressed deep appreciation to former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan for his leadership as head of the Joint African Union, COMESA and IGAD Election Observation Mission.
According to the statement, Jonathan’s stewardship ensured a coordinated and credible observation process that brought together multiple regional blocs to assess the integrity of the polls.

Reaffirming the African Union’s broader mandate, Youssouf reiterated the Commission’s commitment to promoting democracy, good governance and constitutional order across the continent.
He emphasized that credible elections remain a cornerstone for peace, security and sustainable development in Africa.
The AU further applauded the people of Uganda for their resilience and determination to consolidate democratic gains, urging all political stakeholders to maintain dialogue and national cohesion in the post-election period.
