Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has criticized Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga over her statement accusing Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of being behind remarks made by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga mocking the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Governor Wanga, alongside a group of leaders from Nyanza, had condemned Kahiga after a video emerged showing him making controversial comments about Raila during a funeral in Nyeri County. In
her statement, Wanga demanded that Gachagua take responsibility, alleging that Kahiga’s utterances were politically inspired and disrespectful to the memory of the late ODM leader.
However, Nelson Havi dismissed Wanga’s reaction as unnecessary and misplaced. Through a post on his social media pages, the former LSK boss told Wanga and her allies to stop demanding apologies or empathy from leaders who do not share in their mourning.
“Gladys Wanga and team, why are you demanding sanity from Mutahi Kahiga or pleading with Rigathi Gachagua to mourn with us? You should not,” Havi stated.
“You cannot force anyone to be sane or to mourn. Let them be. It is a nonsensical discussion which Baba would not have entertained at all.”
Havi’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions online, with some Kenyans agreeing that the focus should remain on honoring Raila’s legacy rather than engaging in political exchanges, while others accused Havi of being insensitive at a time when the nation is still mourning.
The heated debate underscores the growing political tensions following Raila Odinga’s passing, as leaders continue to trade blame and exchange words over respect and conduct during the mourning period.
