
Before 1992, Kenya was a one party State nation. It was only ruled by the KANU party which was being led by President Daniel Torotich Arap Moi.
Leaders across the country fought so hard for multiparties. Some like Orange democratic Party leader, Honorable Raila Odinga was jailed for years without trial for allegedly disobeying the government of the day.

Here Is The List Of The Top 10 Major Political Parties In Kenya By 2025 Political Parties Register.
1. United Democratic Alliance (UDA)
Leader: President William Ruto
Founded: 2020
Political leaning: Center-right
Key coalition: Kenya Kwanza Alliance
Strength: Currently the ruling party; dominant in the National Assembly and Senate.
The party is working under an economic model called Bottom up. President William Ruto and his key political allies coiled the name and are currently working on the implementation.
The party enjoyed massive support from Riftvalley region, Western and Mount Kenya region prior to the 2022 general election. However, things have changed since the removal of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office through impeachment.
Now the President is struggling to achieve massive support from the Mount Kenya region and other parts of the country with the formation of DCP party by Rigathi Gachagua threatening his re-election in the 2027 general election.
2. Orange Democratic Movement (ODM)
Leader: Raila Odinga
Founded: 2005
Political leaning: Center-left
Key coalition: Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya
Strength: Main opposition party; strong in Nyanza and Coast regions.
The party is currently working with the government of the day, Kenya Kwanza administration through an arrangement called broad based administration.
Orange democratic Party even donated some of it’s people to the government to help stabilize it after a massive Protests from Kenyan youths.
Currently, there is confusion within the party on the way forward with a section of leaders asking Raila Odinga to leave Kenya Kwanza Administration of risk being abandoned himself.
3. Jubilee Party
Leader: (Previously led by Uhuru Kenyatta; now fragmented)
Founded: 2016
Political leaning: Center
Key coalition: Formerly part of both Jubilee Alliance and Azimio
Strength: Former ruling party; influence waning due to internal splits.
4. Wiper Democratic Movement – Kenya
Leader: Kalonzo Musyoka
Founded: 2006
Political leaning: Center-left
Key coalition: Azimio la Umoja
Strength: Strong in Eastern Kenya (Ukambani region).
5. DCP Party.
Leader: Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Deputy Party leader: Senator Cleophas Wakhungu Malalah.
Founded: 2024.
Political leaning: Center
Key coalition: none for now.
Strength: Strong in Mount Kenya region and some part of Western region, Eastern region and Nairobi.
Despite being formed recently. It has proven to be one of the key parties to watch in the 2027 general election.
6. FORD–Kenya
Leader: Moses Wetang’ula
Founded: 1992
Political leaning: Center-right
Key coalition: Kenya Kwanza
Strength: Historic party with strength in Bungoma and Trans-Nzoia.
7. Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP–K)
Leader: Eugene Wamalwa
Founded: 2021
Political leaning: Center-left
Key coalition: Azimio la Umoja
Strength: Rising influence in Western Kenya.
8. Kenya African National Union (KANU)
Leader: Gideon Moi
Founded: 1960
Political leaning: Center-right
Key coalition: Formerly in Azimio
Strength: Kenya’s founding party; symbolic historical influence.
9. Maendeleo Chap Chap
Leader: Alfred Mutua
Founded: 2016
Political leaning: Center
Key coalition: Kenya Kwanza (formerly Azimio)
Strength: Presence in parts of Eastern Kenya.
10. United Progressive Alliance (UPA)
Leader: Allied to Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i.
Founded: Recently (2022)
Political leaning: Regional party
