Democracy Under Threat: Explosive Allegations Emerge from Uganda Elections

This Ugandans has descended over the ongoing electoral process following serious allegations of intimidation, voter bribery and the harassment of polling agents in several areas, including Ssembabule.

A Woman Member of Parliament (MP) flag bearer has publicly condemned the conduct of the election. She warned that the credibility of the entire process is at stake if urgent corrective measures are not taken.

The aspirant spoke to the media shortly after casting her vote. She described what she termed as “widespread irregularities.” These irregularities undermined the principle of free and fair elections.

She alleged that in multiple polling stations, voters were intimidated. Agents representing rival candidates were chased away. They were barred from accessing voting centres altogether.

In places like Ssembabule, authorities should halt the election if it cannot be conducted fairly for everyone.”

According to the flag bearer, such practices not only disenfranchise voters but also erode public trust in democratic institutions.

She claimed that reports from her campaign teams showed coordinated efforts to influence voters. These efforts included cash handouts and threats. They particularly targeted vulnerable communities.

The allegations have sparked concern among civil society groups and election observers. Some of them have echoed calls for tighter monitoring. They also call for swift intervention by electoral authorities.

Analysts warn that failure to address the complaints could deepen political tensions and potentially trigger post-election disputes.

Election officials, however, have maintained that the process is largely peaceful and have urged candidates to channel complaints through legally established mechanisms.

Security agencies on the ground have also stated that they are responding to incidents as they arise, though they declined to comment on specific allegations.
